Biocides

Market Authorized Biocides Database (MABD) The MABD contains product-specific information on all biocides that are currently or were previously authorized in Canada
Listing of Biocides During Transition Period

Under the Biocides Regulations (which came into force May 31, 2025), surface disinfectants and surface sanitizers are transitioning to the biocides framework through May 31, 2029 (existing surface disinfectants, registered surface sanitizers) or May 31, 2031 (surface sanitizers for use in food premises).

During this period, previously authorized disinfectants may remain listed in the Drug Product Database (DPD) and previously registered sanitizers in the Pesticide Product Information Database (PPID).

As existing disinfectants and registered surface sanitizers transition to the biocides framework and/or as new biocides are granted market authorization, they will be listed in the MABD.

Report a side effect

Side effects are troublesome symptoms or feelings that you may not expect that show up when you are using a biocide.

Reporting a side effect helps us:

  • identify potential safety issues
  • improve health product safety for all Canadians
  • communicate changes in product safety information to industry, hospitals, health care providers and consumers
  • undertake regulatory actions, such as changing the product label or removing a product from the Canadian market

The Guidance for industry on safety monitoring and reporting requirements for marketed biocides outlines information requirements of the holder of a biocide market authorization, including post-market safety monitoring and reporting obligations.

Report a compliance issue Compliance and enforcement activities are a key element of safeguarding the drugs and health products to which Canadians have access. Health Canada encourages individuals to send in their complaints about health products: Health Product Complaint Form (FRM-0317)
